Tips for Building a Tech Stack That Will Work for Your Franchisees


Being a franchisor can be tricky. From finding the right franchisees and building solid relationships with them, to managing infrastructure and finances…it’s no walk in the park. With all of the complex business issues you have to solve, your restaurant technology is probably the last thing on your mind.

But it shouldn’t be.

Technology is paramount to attracting the customers you’re hoping to engage (including those pesky Millennials…with $200 billion in annual buying power). Here are some tips to do it right:

Customization with Control

One thing that many franchisors worry about is giving franchisees the freedom to make business decisions while still having control over the overall brand. As the boys in 38 Special once said, “hold on loosely, but don’t let go”. 

In other words, arm franchisees with tools that will allow them to attract their customers, but won’t stray far from the parent brand.

Shiny new restaurant technology tools do nothing if franchisees aren’t sure how to use them. Make sure you give them a comprehensive rundown of all the technology they have at their disposal. If you do online training…all the better. It’s a great way to teach your franchisees what’s what without having to physically be there. Of course, be willing and ready to answer questions, but we love a “set it and forget it” solution. 

Don’t forget that trial and error is your friend.

Your technology should be fail-proof, but that doesn’t mean that all systems will be a good fit for your business. Solicit feedback from franchisees to see what has really been helping their stores and what has only been so-so.

While it may seem like a lot of work now, putting the time and effort into finding the technology that’s going to jive with your brand is essential for attracting customers.
